Mindfulness App - Accenture SONG Assignment

UX Design

1 Day (2024)

Project Details

Project Overview

Practicing mindfulness can improve mental health and well-being, but building a consistent habit can be difficult. Gamification can make mindfulness practices more accessible and enjoyable.

Onboarding process

Long and demanding onboarding processes are a significant barrier to user engagement, especially in mindfulness apps. Users often abandon apps if the initial setup feels overwhelming, despite the importance of collecting data to personalize their experience.

Pattern of negative behavior

The pressure to meet goals or chase rewards, while well-intentioned, can amplify negative emotions when users fall short, leading to reduced engagement and harm to their mental state. Mindfulness apps need to promote progress and effort rather than perfection.

Artefact based reward system

Reward systems, such as badges and milestones, play a crucial role in enhancing user engagement and motivation in wellness apps. According to a study by Hamari et al. (2014), users are 45% more likely to stay engaged when apps reward their efforts with visible achievements, like badges, milestones, or progress tracking.

How might we

How might we make the onboarding process short and engaging while still collecting sufficient data to personalize the app experience?

Potential Solutions

1. Interactive Visual Cards:

  • Use visually appealing activity cards that ask users simple, engaging questions (e.g., "What do you struggle with the most? Stress? Anxiety? Lack of focus?") and let them choose options by tapping or swiping.

  • Incorporate subtle animations or micro-interactions to make the process feel more dynamic and less like a form.

  1. Progressive Data Collection:

  • Instead of collecting all information during onboarding, gather it progressively as users engage with the app. For example:

  • Ask for preferences (e.g., session length, focus area) upfront. Collect additional insights (e.g., daily routines, goals) after the user completes their first mindfulness exercise.

  • Add a progress bar during onboarding to provide a clear sense of completion and reduce frustration.

How might we design a mindfulness app that uses gamification to enhance user engagement while ensuring it promotes self-compassion and avoids triggering negative emotions when users miss goals or rewards?

Potential Solutions

  • Introducing effort-based rewards that celebrate showing up rather than completing rigid tasks. For instance, users could earn badges like “First Step” or “Mindful Moment” for engaging with the app, even briefly, instead of rewards tied solely to strict streaks.

  • Design streaks and goals to adapt dynamically to users’ behavior and option to choose period.

  • Allow users to toggle gamification features on or off based on their preferences.

  • Use non-comparative leaderboards that showcase only the user's journey and milestones, emphasizing personal growth.

  • Create badges that recognize the process, not just the outcome.

  • Loading animations as breathing exercises.

  • Use of visuals, animations and creative card collectibles to make iteractions calming and giving user a moment to pause, and collect artefacts for documenting personal growth.

Personas for Target Users

User Journey Mapping

UI Wireframes

UI Wireframes

Main dashboard screen. User is greeted with 3 key features which are Daily Check-in, Reflection Journal and Habit Tracker

The habit logging screen is gamified with achievement cards that users can collect, providing a sense of reward. To avoid negative behavior patterns, users have the option to toggle off the gamification features.

Interactive mood tracker to check-in your mood everytime the user opens the app.

Track your journaling progress with a color-coded system that highlights your emotional journey. It rewards with consistency, motivating you to stay on track.

An interactive, gamified tool that visualizes your emotions, helping you track your emotional journey. As you reflect and engage, the words evolve, offering a rewarding experience.

A calming loading screen that encourages users to pause, breathe in sync with the expanding circles, and relax. It promotes a brief moment of calm before engaging with the app.

Track daily tasks and earn points as you complete them. The screen encourages users to stay on top of their habits by following a trail which gives these activities a structure which can often times be overlooked. Users can track these points over time to see how consistent they are. Again, Option to turn the points off will be available throughout the app.
